Why I'm Not Writing (Much)

Turns out I'm more of a dancer than a writer

That’s my inner child - happy on the dance floor

As I’ve alluded to in my sporadic recent writings, I’ve switched from writing to running my restaurant/nightclub venues as my primary professional activity. It’s gotten to the point that with other priorities (self-care, family, friends), there really isn’t any time left for writing in a methodical way.

Consider this an apology of sorts. I got all excited about how much fun I was having writing, and it turns out that all along I just hadn’t found an entrepreneurial project that excited me enough to fully occupy my mind. My current venture, converting a restaurant to a nightclub where adults can go to dance in Toronto feels both noble and exciting. Not to mention giving me a place to go dance in Toronto.

Thank you for reading what I’ve written this past year and following me on this journey that has led to such an affirming time in my life. I’m having more fun right now than I can remember ever having. If you come to Runway 06 in Toronto after September 14th, you can see me doing a happy dance!

And although I’m going to write less (for now), I’m still active on other social media, which is helping me develop a reputation that aids me in promoting my venues. Click any of the links on this page, but Instagram is the most indicative of what I’m up to. I’ll still write when the mood strikes, but it won’t be on any sort of a weekly schedule.

I’m working on a post right now about the hardest problem in running a restaurant, and once I figure out how to solve it, I’ll write the post. The problem is “How do you promote a venue to get the right crowd year after year?” The answer is one of the most closely guarded secrets that every venue protects.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t add that two books have led me to the decision not to try and be an entrepreneur and continue my writing in parallel. Quit by Annie Duke, and Essentialism by Greg McKeown both provided motivation and tools to do more by doing less. I encourage you to read them and declutter your own life.

I spent a lot of time in the past year wishing I wasn’t so busy and now I realize that being busy is fine if you’re busy with the right things. Figure out what the right things are. Get rid of everything else.

Do less. Be more.
